Amazon Associates

I have done some investigation on this subject and eventually talked to a representative and I decided to share it with you all, because it seemed it was not completely clear for everyone, as it wasn’t for me either.

Say you are selling goods on Amazon.com. You have an approved Associates account and using the affiliate links provided. Amazon.com is the US Amazon website.

Now a fella from Spain finds your website and clicks on your link at the end of your product review. He will be taken to the product on the Amazon.com where then it says that the item is not being delivered to his location so Amazon.es is being offered to him to continue his shopping there.

What happens then?

Your link takes the visitor to the US website which will benefit you as affiliate only on that website. Quoting the representative’s answer here:

“If you have a link on your site from the U.S. Associates Program, that link will automatically lead people back to Amazon.com for purchase. If the customer chooses to leave Amazon.com and go to their own local Amazon, then the purchase will not count toward your U.S. Program earnings. They must purchase from the country site that the link goes to.”

This clarifies for us affiliates that shoppers and website visitors of a region that has their own Amazon website will need the associated affiliate account and affiliate link separately to the same product.

You will have to apply for each program individually. Everyone is welcome to shop from any of our sites, but there may be unique advantages to each.”

So I want to serve US and UK Amazon shoppers means that I will need an Amazon.co.uk Associates account as well.

Amazon international websites besides Amazon.com are as follows:

  • Amazon.co.uk in the UK,
  • Amazon.de in Germany,
  • Amazon.fr in France,
  • Amazon.it in Italy,
  • Amazon.ca in Canada,
  • Amazon.co.jp in Japan,
  • Amazon.es in Spain,
  • Amazon.in in India,
  • Amazon.br in Brazil,
  • Amazon.com.mx in Mexico,
  • Amazon.cn in China.

Once you have all the desired affiliate accounts, you can install plugins that make it easy for the visitors and you to click the region relevant affiliate link.

I hope this will clear this dilemma to everyone like it did for me. Thanks for reading. Cheers!
